The “sealed for life” myth
BMW and some other manufacturers listed ZF automatics as sealed for life in the service book. ZF, who make the gearbox, publish a service interval. The fluid shears and picks up clutch material. A “lifetime” fill is the fluid that lasts the life they assumed, not the life you want from the car.
Independent BMW specialists treat a ZF 6HP or 8HP service as routine maintenance, the same as brake fluid.
What a proper ZF service includes
Drain, drop or replace the pan (the filter is often in the pan on 8HP), refill with ZF-spec fluid, set the level at the specified temperature. Skipping the temperature step overfills or underfills the box.
We do not use supermarket ATF. The additive pack in ZF Lifeguard (or the exact equivalent) is part of how the mechatronic stays alive.
When to book one
Book a ZF service if you are at or past 80,000 miles, if the shifts have turned harsh, or if the car has only ever had the factory fill. Towing, track use and lots of short trips bring that interval forward.
