A quick look
Lights on the drive, tyre tread with a 20p, washer bottle full. That finds some fails. It misses most of them.
What we actually check
A service already includes a lot of this. If the car is due both, do the service first and we will tell you what would fail a test. If it is only the MOT you care about, say so when you book.
- Brake imbalance and a disc that is below minimum, which you cannot see with the wheel on.
- Play in track rod ends, wishbones and drop links. Fine on the drive, fail on the ramp.
- Corrosion on brake and fuel lines, and on the structure around suspension mounts.
- Tyres: tread, age, bulges, and different sizes on the same axle.
- Emissions: a diesel that looks fine and then fails on smoke because the DPF is tired or a sensor is lying.
- Number plate lamps, a cracked screen in the zone, a seatbelt that does not retract.
- Headlamp aim. Legal bulbs, wrong aim, instant fail.
Advisories
An advisory is not a pass forever. Pads close to the limit, a tyre at 2mm, a slightly weeping shock. Fix them before they become a fail, not the week the next test is due.
Book it as an inspection
We quote before we start. See the servicing page. If a warning light is on, book a diagnostic as well. A pre-MOT will not diagnose an engine management light.
