Battery first
BMWs and later Audis are fussy about voltage. A battery that still starts the car in September will throw random 4x4, DSC or gearbox messages in January. We load-test it. If it is on the way out, replace it with the correct spec, not a supermarket lump that the car then argues with.
Coolant and the bits you cannot see from the filler
Check level when cold. On these cars a slow loss often means a water pump, a thermostat housing or a pipe under the inlet, not a radiator you can see. Do not keep topping it up and hoping. If the level drops twice, book a look.
Tyres and brakes
Legal minimum is 1.6mm. That is not enough in the wet on the M42. We look at tread, even wear and age. A six-year-old tyre with tread left can still be hard and useless.
Brakes get ignored until they scrape. Pads, discs and a sticking caliper show up on the first frosty morning. A service inspection catches that before the MOT does.
DSG, Haldex and ZF
Cold oil is thicker. A DSG overdue a fluid change feels worse in winter. Same for Haldex on Golf R, S3 and Tiguan 4Motion. ZF automatics on BMWs are not sealed for life. If you are near the interval, do it before the cold, not after the first harsh shift.
Lights, wipers, screenwash
Simple, and still the reason cars fail a quick check. LED daytime lights do not mean the dipped beam works. Screenwash with a winter mix. Wipers that smear get replaced, not “given another month”.
Book it as a service, not a panic
If the car is due, book a service and tell us it is the winter check. If a warning light is already on, book a diagnostic instead. The difference is explained in the diagnostic versus service guide. Pricing is on the servicing page.
