WHAT WE ARE SEEING MOST IN THE WORKSHOP THIS MONTH

First of a monthly series. DSG fluid after summer heat, cooling leaks on VAG cars, DPF soots from school-run diesels, and batteries that will not last the winter.

From the B37 workshop, September 2026

DSG services after a hot summer

Wet-clutch DSGs that skipped a fluid change through the summer are coming in with a judder from a stop. Heat thins tired oil. The Golf R we wrote up in August was the clear example. We are seeing the same on Golf GTIs and Audi S3s that have never had the filter done.

If the gearbox has never been serviced and the car is over 40,000 miles, book the fluid and filter. Do not start with a clutch quote.

Cooling leaks on VAG cars

Plastic thermostat housings and water pumps on TSI and TDI engines. Slow loss, no puddle on the drive, heater that takes longer to warm. Customers top it up twice, then the light comes on at the lights on the A45.

We pressure-test it. Guessing which pipe it is from a photo wastes a day.

DPF on short-trip diesels

School run, Chelmsley Wood to Solihull, never a clear 20 minutes at speed. The DPF never completes a regen. Then the engine light, limp mode, or a dealer quote for a new filter.

Some of these need a forced regen and a look at sensors. Some are blocked because the car is the wrong tool for the journeys. We will say so. See the DPF post for what we actually look for.

Batteries before the cold

BMW 4x4 and DSC messages that clear after a restart. That is often the battery, not the transfer box. We are load-testing anything with a vague electrical complaint before we chase modules.

Book while slots are open

Winter demand starts once the clocks change. If the car is due a service, book it this month. Widget on this page, or the servicing page for what a service includes. We quote before we start.
