INDEPENDENT BMW, AUDI AND VW SPECIALIST VS MAIN DEALER: WHAT IS ACTUALLY DIFFERENT

The work itself is the same job: manufacturer schedule, the right oil, OEM or OE-quality parts, and a digital service entry where the car supports it. The difference is overhead. A main dealer funds a showroom and franchise. An independent specialist funds tools, training and a workshop. Your warranty stays valid either way if the work is done to standard.

Quick Answer
The work itself is the same job: manufacturer schedule, the right oil, OEM or OE-quality parts, and a digital service entry where the car supports it. The difference is overhead. A main dealer funds a showroom and franchise. An independent specialist funds tools, training and a workshop. Your warranty stays valid either way if the work is done to standard.

Warranty

UK and EU block exemption rules mean you can service a car under manufacturer warranty at an independent garage. The work has to meet the manufacturer’s technical standard. It does not have to be done by a franchise dealer.

Keep invoices. That is your proof, same as a dealer stamp.

Digital service books

BMW iDrive, Audi and VW digital records can be updated outside the dealer network by workshops with the right kit. A missing dealer stamp is not the same as a missing service.

Parts

Dealers fit OEM parts and charge dealer labour. We fit OEM and OE-quality parts and charge independent labour. On brakes, steering and suspension we do not use cheap pattern parts.

Cost

Main dealer labour in this area is often £150 to £200 an hour. That is the franchise, not magic parts. Current independent figures are on our homepage pricing table and the servicing page. We quote before we start.

What a specialist actually adds

DSG, Haldex, ZF, VAG timing belts, BMW digital entries. That is daily work here, not a once-a-month unfamiliar job on a mixed-make ramp.

QUESTIONS ON THIS TOPIC

Is an independent BMW specialist as good as a dealer?
On the mechanical work, yes, if they have the kit and use the right parts. You are not paying for a showroom.
Will a dealer refuse to honour a warranty if I service independently?
They cannot reject a valid warranty claim solely because an independent did the service, if the work met the standard. See our warranty guide.
Do you update digital service history?
Yes. BMW iDrive and manufacturer digital records where the vehicle supports it.
